Minutes of the Arvin Union School District Board of Trustees Regular Meeting held on November 21, 2006.

 

The meeting was called to order by Mr. Stoner at 6:33 p.m.

Dr. Bergevin recommended the following change to the agenda.

On motion of Mr. Owens, seconded by Mrs. Tarver, the board unanimously approved the minutes of Regular Meeting on October 17, 2006.

Dr. Bergevin took the opportunity to introduce to the Board and audience Toni De Rosa, new editor of the Arvin Tiller and Lamont Reporter.

 

Dr. Bergevin introduced Adriana Andino, Toys for Tots Director in Arvin.  Ms. Andino shared that this will be the 3rd year of participation and DiGiorgio District will be included in the Arvin drive.  She reported they have over 100 families signed up and still have three weeks to accept applications.  Distribution day will be Monday, December 18, 2006 in the Haven Drive Gym.  She also reported they are accepting monetary and food donations.

 

Dr. Bergevin presented information to the Board reviewing the District School Safety Plans.  He explained the process that is taken annually to develop a Safe Schools Plan that best serves our district and provides training to staff in the event of a disaster emergency and evacuation. 

 

Dr. Bergevin informed the Board that El Camino Real is on track at 40% completion.  He also gave an update on the Eminent Domain for the property east of the district office.  The process has started and filed in Superior Court.  Dr. Bergevin extended a personnel invitation to the Board for the Annual District Office Open House on December 14.

 

Mrs. Kavanagh reported to the Board that Preschool very busy preparing for their annual visits and the holiday season activities.  Enrollment has stayed steady at nearing the max of 138.

 

 

Mrs. Rhett shared that Sierra Vista has finished their 2nd benchmarks for grades 1 – 5.  Students are working hard to be included on the Principal’s List for high academic achievements and the Cougar List for Most Improved academically.  Sierra Vista has started a Tutoring Program which involves 5th grade students giving up their recess time to help tutor and buddy with a younger student.  Finally Mrs. Rhett reported that Sierra Vista had 14 students qualify for Regional Oral Language Festival and 7 students qualified for the District Spelling Bee.

 

Mr. High shared that Bear Mountain is excited with their benchmark results.  Two Principal’s Lists contain those students who have reached goals for being proficient and most improved.  He also shared that Bear Mountain staff had returned from attending a California Math Conference to enhance math skills that ultimately aid the students.

 

Mr. High explained a Safe Ambassador Training that is in process where 45 students and faculty train for two days on ways to cut down on bullying on the playgrounds.  These techniques will be implemented after Thanksgiving.   Finally Mr. High proudly informed the Board that Bear Mountain had 7 students with 3 alternates that qualified for the District Spelling Bee and 2 students qualified for the Regional Oral Language Festival.

 

Mrs. Salinas shared with the Board new incentive programs to encourage students to practice good behavior and manners.  Also, staff has seen academic improvement made by the students.  Haven Drive is getting ready to release their 2nd Edition of the Haven Drive Parent NewsLetter in December.  Also Academy field trips are planned to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 27 & 28.  Finally, Mrs. Salinas extended an invitation to the Board to visit the Haven Drive campus at any time.

Adriana Andino addressed the Board requesting they reconsider and approve a Classified employee request for comp time that was earlier denied.  Dr. Bergevin assured the Board that he would meet with Ms. Andino in private and resolve the matter.

Dr. Bergevin addressed the Board at this time and reviewed the Tentative Agreement for the Arvin Union School District Teachers Association and Classified Employees Association.

A public hearing was opened at 7:38 p.m. to allow public response to the Disclosure of Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Arvin Union School District and the Arvin Teachers Association.  Mrs. Roberts, ATA President, informed the Board that ATA had ratified their Collective Bargaining Agreement and recommended Board approval.  The hearing closed at 7:30 p.m. and the following action was taken.

On motion of Mrs. Tarver, seconded by Mr. Sumaya, the board unanimously approved the Collective Bargaining Agreement contract between the Arvin Union School District and the Arvin Teachers Association effective July 1, 2006.

A public hearing was opened at 7:44 p.m. to allow public response to the Disclosure of Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Arvin Union School District and the California School Employee Association.  Ms. Andino, CSEA President, informed the Board that CSEA had ratfied their Collective Bargaining Agreement and recommended Board approval.  The hearing closed at 7:45 p.m. and the following action was taken.

On motion of Mr. Sumaya, seconded by Mrs. Tarver, the board unanimously approved the Collective Bargaining Agreement contract between the Arvin Union School District and the California School Employee Association effective July 1, 2006.
