Mrs. Kavanagh greeted
the board and extended an invitation to the Annual District Office Open House
on December 13, 2007. She then
introduced Mrs. Regina Padilla-Bohanon, Director of Food Services. Mrs. Padilla-Bohanon
presented to the board an overview of the current status of the Child
Nutrition Department. Data reflected
that as of November 26, 2007 the percentage of Paid, Reduced and Free status
for student meals served was as follows:
7% Paid, 9% Reduced and 84% Free. Also she gave the results of the
2007 Random Verification Audit. It is required that 3% of the student
population be randomly selected therefore 41 households were contacted. Only 17 households responded leaving 24
households as nonresponsive therefore returning to paid status immediately.
Of those responding verification changed status on 10. Mrs.
Padilla-Bohanon also reported the state department has issued information
that from now until 2012 a budget crunch has been projected. Therefore she would recommend that the
board consider increasing the cost of lunches for the next school year. Upon request from the
board, Mrs. Padilla-Bohanon reported the use of Non-Pricing meals at
schools in the Kern County. There are
four districts that operate non-pricing for breakfast and lunch. However if
Arvin chose to go non-pricing there would be a loss of over $50,000 in cash
revenue; she recommended to not consider non-pricing for the Arvin Union
School District. Mrs. Padilla-Bohanon
shared that her staff serve over 3,200 meals a day and she is constantly
working to reduce labor and food cost. Mr. Stoner
acknowledged Mr. Ramiro Ramirez from the audience, a district parent, who
addressed the board regarding the bus stop at 4th & North
A. Mr. Ramirez stated that the bus
stop had recently been moved from Wilson & Stuart to 4th &
North A. Mr. Ramirez informed the
board the current stop is near a small market that usually has people standing
around outside and is not safe for the small children. He asked that the district investigate the
issue and would like to see the stop changed back to the original location at
Wilson & Stuart. Mrs. Kavanagh
assured Mr. Ramirez that she would work with the Director of Maintenance,
Operations, Transportation and Safety to check this stop again to see what would
be the best for the students. Mr. Stoner also
acknowledged Mrs. Delia Villalon who is a BME parent. Mrs. Villalon has a fourth grade daughter
who is not allowed to ride the bus, yet other fourth grade students are. She feels this is not fair and would like
to see this situation monitored. District policy is that all 4th
grade students are to walk to and from school who attend BME. Mrs. Kavanagh recommended that the vice
principal assist in monitoring this bust loading. |
