Communications from the Public

Mrs. Kavanagh addressed the board regarding Certificated Notice of Not to Reemploy or Reduce Service Level.  Budget information has been received that Reading First is going to be funded for one more year, therefore three coaching positions and one coordinator position will not be eliminated for the 2008-2009 school year.

Also two teachers who had been given March 15th lay off notices for 2008-2009 have been notified they will be eligible for employment next year.  Therefore Mrs. Kavanagh was very happy to report that the Arvin Union School District will not have any lay offs for the 2008-2009 school year.

Copies of a District Assistance and Intervention (DAIT) Survey were given to Mr. Stoner, Mr. Owens, and Mrs. Tarver.  Mrs.  Kavanagh briefly reviewed the purpose and use of the survey and asked that the board return the completed survey at the next regular board meeting on May 20, 2008.

Reports and Communications

Board Candidates were given the opportunity to address the Board.  There were four candidates who submitted letters of interest and met the requirements that allowed them to be considered eligible.

Mrs. Hilda Sumaya greeted the board members and asked that they would allow her daughter Ms. Isabel Sumaya to read her letter of interest.  She expressed this was a very emotional time and felt she may not be able to make it through.  At that time Isabel read her mother’s qualifications and interests for being considered to fill the fifth vacancy on the school board.

Mrs. Amanda Torres addressed the board members expressing her willingness and commitment to serve the community and students of the Arvin Union School District if selected as the next member.  As an employee of the district and parent of students in the district she feels her knowledge would be an asset to the board of trustees.

Mrs. Jerry Carter introduced herself to the board members and shared that she has been a resident of Arvin for years and had raised her family here attending the Arvin Union School District.  Her career of over 35 years included an employee of Arvin Union School District and Arvin High School.  As a retiree she felt she would have ample time to dedicate to servicing the community and students of Arvin.

Mrs. Anabel Rubio greeted the board members and expressed her interest in serving the community and students of Arvin as a board member.  She considered the challenge with excitement and dedication from experience she has gained working in the field of education.  She felt what ever the board’s decision, she along with the other three were highly qualified to serve in this capacity.
