                  Minutes of the Arvin Union School District Board of Trustees Regular Meeting held on November 18, 2008.

 

The meeting was called to order by Mr. Stoner at 6:33 p.m.

Mrs. Kavanagh informed the board it was necessary to make two corrections on the agenda.

6.1 Certificated Personnel – Fernando Buzman – Weekend Academy Teacher - Overseer – should read Fernando Guzman.

6.1.1 Consider to approve Veronica Cruz as the home teacher for Sierra Vista 2nd grade student, Jovanny Gonzalez, for thirty days beginning October 21, 2008 – should read Bear Mountain Elementary.

On motion of Mr. Owens, seconded by Mrs. Tarver, the board unanimously approved the minutes of the October 21, 2008 Regular Board meeting.

Mrs. Kavanagh greeted the board and had the privilege of presenting a certificate of completion to Mrs. Kathie Kouklis and Mrs. Georgia Rhett.  Both administrators have completed the CBO (Chief Business Officer) course at Cal State Bakersfield.

 

Mrs. Kavanagh also recognized Bear Mountain Elementary as a Reading 1st School making the “Greatest Gains” on Index Scores within the Cohort 2, Region 8.

 

 

 

Mrs. Kavanagh shared a letter of correspondence she had received which announced Haven Drive Middle School has officially exited the SAIT Program.  Haven Drive Middle School has completed two years of positive improvement.

 

Mrs. Kavanagh also had the privilege to recognize two board members for their service to the Arvin Union School District.  Mrs. Virgie Witte has served the district during two separate appointed terms. Mr. Tim Owens has served the district for twenty-three years.

 

Mrs. Kavanagh gave an update on the state budget. The district 1st Interim is being prepared and we have been notified to expect midyear cuts.

 

Finally, Mrs. Kavanagh extended an invitation to the Board for the District Annual Open House on December 11, 2008.

 

Mrs. Toni Pichardo, CSEA Chapter 164 President asked to address the board.  She gave each board member a grievance packet and asked for a response within 30 days.

On motion of Mr. Owens, seconded by Mrs. Tarver, the board unanimously ratified the Memorandum of Understanding – Probation Truancy Consortium Transfer of Funds for (1) Probation Officer between the Arvin Union School District and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools office in the amount of $10,000.00.

 

On motion of Mrs. Witte, seconded by Mrs. Tarver, the board unanimously ratified the Service Agreement between the Arvin Union School District and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools AB430 Administrator Training Program for Laurie Bowden in the amount of $3,000.00.

Mrs. Kavanagh led a brief discussion regarding the process to fill a Board vacancy as a result of Mrs. Hilda Sumaya’s resignation.  The county election was held on November 4th for four board positions that were on the ballot therefore; it is not necessary to appoint or have a special election to fill Mrs. Sumaya’s vacancy.
